HOW TO FORM V

First of all, don’t tighten your lips into a circle. Instead, keep your lips loose and touch the bottom of your upper teeth with the edge of your lower lip. The Sounds of Speech model uses an exaggerated movement—she pulls in her bottom lip quite far below and behind the front teeth, making firm contact between the lip and the teeth. But native speakers don’t usually do this, so I’m going to tell you another way that is more natural.

To create a V that is more like the one native speakers use, bring your lower lip up, and gently brush it against the edge of your upper teeth. As you say the sound, you should feel your lower lip tickle a bit as the air flow makes it vibrate against your upper teeth.

Once you can feel that you are making W and V differently, do the practice exercises below. The more times you run through these exercises, the quicker you will start to build separate muscle habits for each sound.
